Challenges

You are not on your own: We know that beavers can provide challenges to landowners. The Lands Council will work with landowners, and offer support to those that participate in the program.

Your trees and property are important – there are ways to protect them.

Flooding: By installing flow devices, most beaver created wetlands can be saved, while ending unwanted flooding. Proven, cost-effective devices and methods such as tree enclosures, Beaver Bafflers and Beaver Deceivers are available to control objectionable flooding and protect trees.

Mosquitoes: These insects may be a problem, but a healthy wetland provides habitat for fish and birds that can control these pests.

Fish: Some species of non-native sport fish thrive in unblocked streams and may not do as well, but native trout prefer the deep pools, cooler temperatures and shallow riffles created by beaver dams. Trout and beavers evolved together, and native fish populations are stronger with beaver, than without.
