Be a Willow Warrior on Thompson Creek

  • Thompson Creek in Newman Lake 16108 Northwest Newman Lake Drive Newman Lake, WA, 99025 United States (map)

Join the Spokane Conservation District (SCD) and The Lands Council (TLC) for an educational planting event on Thompson Creek in Newman Lake. We will have two sessions available; you’re welcome to join for one or both!

Morning Session: 10am-12:30pm
Afternoon Session: 1pm-4pm

For over a decade, the Spokane Conservation District has been welcoming volunteers into the Hangman Creek watershed through our Willow Warriors program. Volunteers journey by canoe to plant willows along eroding stretches of stream bank. This year we are expanding the program to a pedestrian day to benefit Newman Lake!

Each session will include an educational walk along the creek to view TLC’s beaver dam analog (BDA) project and time spent planting along the downstream stretch of the creek.

Kat Hall with TLC will be providing an educational walk along Thompson Creek to view beaver dam analogs and talk about the goals, challenges, and successes of the project. Afterwards, we’ll move downstream to plant willows and cottonwood along the creek’s banks. As they establish, these plantings will help reduce erosion, provide shade for cooler water, and increase wildlife habitat.

Jade McKeen with SCD will also have resources available for residents about the Newman Lake LakeCare program, and the Environmentally Responsible Septic cost-share program.

For more information please contact Jade McKeen at jade@spokanecd.org.
