December Biochar Burn

By Adam Gebauer

On Wednesday, December 15th, The Lands Council, in partnership with the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, will be hosting a biochar demonstration. We will be converting wood biomass from a forest thinning project into valuable biochar. Biochar sequesters carbon in an extremely long lasting form that has many soil benefits. Due to it's porous nature, biochar has incredible water holding capacity and creates habitat for beneficial soil flora and fauna. When left on site on the forest floor, biochar can reduce compaction and erosion associated with logging practices. When amended with compost, biochar can be a great agricultural addition.

Please come prepared to help as we will load 3 Oregon kilns and chat around the fire about the potential of biochar to reduce forest fuels. We will be lighting the first kiln around 9:00 am and plan to finish up around 2:00 pm. The demonstration site is a short drive up a dirt road off Indian Creek Road, just south of the Indian Creek Community Forest offices.
