Fossil Fuel News - January 2021

By Laura Ackerman

The proposed Kalama methanol refinery is an enormous fracked-gas-to methanol refinery proposed by Northwest Innovation Works (they also propose one in Port Westward, OR). If approved, this refinery would be disastrous for our climate. You can help oppose this by participating in No Methanol Mondays. You can also help oppose this with these three quick actions:

  • Send an email to Washington leaders to reject permits for this project. To do so, click here.

  • Make a phone call to Governor Inslee’s office at 360-902-4111. Press 2 to leave a message. Leave a message telling him that you are counting on his administration to deny the Kalama methanol refinery, a project that would use more fracked gas than all of Washington’s power plants, combined.

A big thank you to the Power Past Fracked Gas Coalition for all their work on this!

In the spring, the Washington State Department of Ecology will be holding hearings (likely virtual) on how its GHG (Greenhouse Gas) Impacts GAP (Greenhouse Gas Assessment for Projects) rulemaking. The Lands Council is a part of the organizing team for the hearing. You will be hearing more about that in the next few months. You can find out more here:

Also, Stand Up To Oil (The Lands Council is a member) is closely following the Custer, WA oil train derailment which happened December 22, 2020. An informative article is here: KUOW - Is carrying crude oil by rail worth the risk? This expert says no.

Finally, some of you were part of the huge and successful effort to stop coal exports in the Northwest. THANK YOU!! Lighthouse Resources, the proposers of Millennium Bulk Terminals in Longview has filed for bankruptcy and laid off employees at its mine in Decker Montana.
