Joint Statement by The Lands Council and Mike Petersen

Spokane, Washington | April 28, 2021

The Lands Council and Mike Petersen, its former executive director have reached a confidential agreement regarding Mr. Petersen's departure from the organization.

The Lands Council, one of the most respected and successful environmental forest policy organizations in the West, was founded by Dr. John Osborn in 1984. Its mission is to protect and restore the forests, rivers, and wildlife of the Inland Northwest. Mr. Petersen joined the council in 1991 to watch over the region’s national forests, and became its executive director in 2002. Under his leadership, with the support of the Board and staff, the organization has gained a reputation for collaborative problem-solving of forest-related issues, often sitting across the table from the very federal management agencies, timber companies, and other stakeholders that previously resorted to litigation to find solutions.

"We value Mike's leadership and dedication to The Lands Council's purpose and mission these many past years" said Greg Gordon, the president of The Lands Council board.  "He helped to put us on the map and make us the organization we are, and we wish him every future success."

"My hope," said Petersen, “is The Lands Council continues to thrive doing its important work with the generous support of its donors and partners. I look forward to continuing to focus on forest issues and do what I can to protect them."

The board of directors will soon begin a search for a new executive director. In the meantime, Amanda Parrish, who has been with the organization for 12 years, will serve as the Interim Director.
