Outdoor Environmental Education

By Kat Hall

In this age of virtual learning, TLC has decided that our niche is to offer as many quality, COVID-safe outdoor experiences as we can this fall. As such, here are two projects that we are facilitating:

OCTOBER OUTINGS

  • Tuesday Tree Plantings: Every Tuesday in October from 4:00-5:30 at our site along Marshall Creek (south of Spokane). Visit the following link for more information and to register:

  • Thursday Field Trips: Join TLC in a hike at Liberty Lake Regional Park or the Dishman Hills Natural Area. Every Thursday in October from 4:00-5:30. Visit the following link for more information and to register:

Students must pre-register. Group size will be limited to 10 students or less per TLC chaperone. First come, first served. Students arrive and leave on their own. Mask-wearing and social distancing will be enforced.

VENTURE OUTDOORS!

Starting in October, each month for the rest of 2020, TLC will choose 4-5 local Outdoor Adventure Destinations and post a “web link to adventure” for each (containing information, highlights, map, directions, etc.) on our website. Students (or families!) choose one or more destinations and follow the adventure. They share a “selfie” holding a sign that says “Venture Outdoors with The Lands Council!” and post their photo on social media. Incentive prizes will be awarded to students in December based on the number of outdoor adventures safely accomplished and shared.

This project is on students’ own time and at their own risk. Students are highly encouraged to take appropriate Safe Adventure Precautions for COVID (e.g. wearing masks, limiting group size, and social-distancing). Family-friendly!

Stay tuned for the launch of this project in mid-October!
