This Monday, May 23rd, Spokane City Council members will vote on a drought response ordinance. Spokane residents use more water per capita (per person/per day) than 97% of Americans – we can do better! Our water use increases considerably, just when the River needs it the most – when stream flows are low during the summer, the aquifer contributions to the River are crucial. This new ordinance is simply asking Spokane residents to consider their impact on the River during the summer low-flow season.
Action needs to be taken TODAY to protect your aquifer and the Spokane River as we expect to experience increased population and increased drought!

Your email to City Council might include some of the following (shared from the Spokane Riverkeeper):
We love our Spokane River, it is a community treasure!
We need to protect our River - & its flows - from overconsumption, wasted water use, and a changing climate.
The Spokane River depends on SVRP aquifer flow during the long hot summer for its health (in low-flow seasons).
Water conservation is a way that each of us has an opportunity to do something positive for our River to assure that it is climate-resilient in the face of longer hotter summers and potentially less snowpack.
This ordinance C36209 is a mix of drought response and water conservation tools (voluntary/mandatory) - based on the SAS recommendations - that allows the community to address overconsumption by curtailing peak demand or water use.
This drought response/water conservation plan is innovative in that it listens to the River. It uses crisis River flows as triggers.
Please support water conservation - support ordinance C36209.
