The Lands Council’s members are critical to our mission of preserving and revitalizing our Inland Northwest forests, water, and wildlife. Our member dedication is truly the driving force behind our organization – and we need support now more than ever.
It is time for our annual membership renewals, and we invite you to continue being a driving force behind our organization by renewing your membership or becoming a new member today.
Our members and their loyalty has enabled us to accomplish significant goals and milestones this year. Here is some of the amazing work we have accomplished this year:
We formalized a longstanding ad-hoc partnership between The Lands Council (TLC), US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), and Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. This allows us to share resources with Turnbull to carry out habitat restoration projects in wetlands and riparian zones. In April, we brought over 200 volunteers to Turnbull for our first ever Earth Fest, where volunteers helped the Refuge pot new seedlings, maintain pollinator gardens, and learn local flora on guided hikes. In return, USFWS biologists help supervise TLC’s seasonal field restoration technicians each summer. We’ll even be sharing an AmeriCorps member with Turnbull in the coming year!
We are leading the way in uniting environmental and social justice groups regionally to find the most holistic climate change solutions possible. We know that too often, environmental injustices inflicted on families and neighbors are not adequately explained to the very people most affected. There is a strong need for continued education in these communities to empower neighborhoods to better protect themselves from environmental injustice. We have partnered with NAACP Spokane, Refugee and Immigrant Connections Spokane, and Asians for Collective Liberation Spokane to find overlapping priorities. We’ve also planted over 500 free street trees in low-income, low-canopy neighborhoods with highly engaged community input in order to safeguard the quality of life for those most in need.
We celebrated the 20-year anniversary of the Northeast Washington Forestry Coalition (NEWFC), one of the first of its kind in the country! We helped form NEWFC in 2003 to better promote forest restoration while contributing to a strong local economy at the same time. Twenty years later, we’re still on the ground assessing the impacts timber management methods have on streams and wildlife habitat and proposing restoration strategies. We are also investigating rural development toolkits for circular economies - enhancing the carbon sink effects of forests by capturing carbon from forestry waste, converting it to biochar, and finding new commercial applications for biochar products.
Our member support is crucial for us to sustain this vital and groundbreaking work. Please stand with The Lands Council by renewing your membership or becoming a member today. We greatly depend on members - like you - to support our efforts to tackle the pressing challenges that endanger our regional environment. Together, we can discover innovative solutions and protect what makes the Inland Northwest so great.
