On a beautiful spring day, the birds were chirping, the sun was shining, and over 200 volunteers gathered at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge for our Earth Fest event. Volunteers were from all over and all ages, and they had one thing in common: a love for the natural world and a desire to make a positive impact on the environment on Earth Day.

On the last day of July, as afternoon temperatures hit triple digits for the fifth day in a row, I donned a wet one-piece bathing suit under my dress and headed to the Spokane Valley Mall in search of a place to cool off. My East Central home in Spokane is over 100 years old and many of the windows are painted shut, creating a virtual indoor oven during heat waves like the one the Inland Northwest recently experienced. To combat this, I, along with many others, spend my summer weekends at public beaches along the Spokane River and relish swimming in the cold, aquifer-fed waters. While a wet bathing suit is relatively uncomfortable in most climates, I find that it’s a perfect recipe for keeping cool after a swim, especially when coupled with the powerful air conditioning at the mall.
Guardian Life has been a community partner of The Lands Council since 2017. Over the years, they have generously supported TLC by sponsoring the Spokane River Clean-Up, volunteering at tree plantings, and so much more!

One of the hardest parts of living through a global pandemic is the missed connections with members of your community. Back in the day, you would volunteer or attend an event and meet a new friend, a neighbor. You would realize how much you have in common, you might know similar people, and you could earn something new. The ability to create organic conversations and connections has been put on the back burner for well, almost two years. Although we are not in a post-pandemic world (and we may never be), the opportunity to connect with our community is slowly happening again - and we are all ready for it.
This year, The Lands Council is partnering with The Inland Northwest Land Conservancy, along with Avista and US Fish & Wildlife Service for our annual Reforest Spokane Day. And YOU can help us plant 2,000 native trees and shrubs in this critical wildlife and recreation corridor on Saturday, October 23 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
