Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) Intern Position: Spring 2022

Climate Justice Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) Coordination Intern: Spring 2022

The Lands Council is looking for a TSCA Coordination Intern in their Climate Justice Program to assist with an outreach project for TSCA reform. The position would be 3-5 hours a week, with flexibility on day(s) and time to meet goals. The TSCA Intern will prepare a call and record datasheet on responses and people called and help Climate Justice Program Director as needed. This position is paid a stipend and will provide the intern with tangible non-profit organizing and advocacy skills. This position runs from April 15 through the middle of June and pays a $750 stipend ($250 upfront, with $500 upon completion).

Big goal: Reform TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act) to reduce the impacts of PCBs by lowering the limit allowed in products such as ink and pigments. Sub goal is to inform communities across the country that PCBs are still being produced inadvertently “iPCBs” under certain processes that have chlorine and high temperatures present.

Our message: Spokane and other cities are being challenged by low limits and water quality standards for PCBs. We have found that PCBs are still being produced at a level that is millions of particulates per part times higher than limits. We need to address this, and we have found some solutions. Is this an issue for you, can we partner?

Tasks include:

  • Active outreach to community leaders, city municipalities, stormwater and wastewater treatment facilities, state water quality agencies, Universities, iPCB supply chains and NGOS.

  • Creating and providing these entities with the tools and support to build public awareness, educate the supply chain, and join with a national effort to reduce allowable TSCA limits for iPCBs.

  • Assist the Climate Justice Director in reaching out and engage all groups mentioned above in ‘goals’, educate and enlist their support with advocacy as needed. Record details on a spreadsheet for easy reference showing who and when people were contacted, what was their response and engagement level on a 1-5 scale (1 not willing – 5 did not need any convincing). Follow through as required.

TSCA Intern (TI) must be comfortable making phone calls and asking for specifics as scripted. We need someone who is organized and will represent The Lands Council well. Interested applicants are asked to send a resume and brief email about their interest to nsherazi@landscouncil.org by April 8, 2022.
